Peter Martinez returned to the same house three months after helping a man through a medical emergency. The patient was in another crisis. For Peter, a paramedic preparing for a future in emergency medicine, that second visit raised a question that would change his career: what was happening between the calls?

Peter had worked ocean rescue, ski patrol, ambulances, and search and rescue. He loved the work and came from generations of medical doctors. He was applying to medical schools when he began looking for a different way to work with people over time. That search eventually led him to chiropractic and to the practices he discusses with Tab.

He remains grateful for the emergency care he helped provide. His questions concern the next part of a patient's life, after the immediate danger has passed. Peter uses a fire department and a gardener to explain the different roles he believes acute care and ongoing health support can play. Tab keeps asking him to define the terms, including the difference between a chronic condition and debilitating pain.

Stress gives them another place to dig. Peter describes the patients who arrive saying their headaches or neck tension are simply the result of a stressful life. He explains how he evaluates those concerns and the role he assigns to the nervous system in his approach. Tab brings his own experience of working on his feet, changing eating habits, and noticing how people carry tension into an appointment. Their examples keep bringing the discussion back to the person behind the symptoms.

By the end, they are comparing the attention each gives to the body in front of them. Tab describes learning to work with someone's natural hair patterns and the questions that changed his technique. Peter talks about finding a practitioner willing to keep asking why a problem persists. The repeat emergency call still informs his work: he wants to understand what can change between one crisis and the next.

Peter's medical opinions and descriptions of chiropractic are his own. This episode is informational and is not individualized medical advice.
