Joe Coronado's grandmother had no use for Alexa. Why buy a device to turn on the lights when the kids next door could do it? Joe turned that family story into a video. He says it reached millions of people on TikTok, giving him an audience for the memories that would grow into Chancla Academy.
The account began under a different name: Confessions of a Poor Family. Joe tells Tab about growing up with little money, finding humor in ordinary routines, and recognizing the characters he had been surrounded by all along. His grandmother's presence runs through the stories, from their time watching television together to the family memory that helped inspire the Chancla Academy name.
Tab recognizes plenty of those household details himself. They trade memories of reused containers, special cups, and drinking from a garden hose. Joe describes realizing how many people could recognize their own upbringing in something he had thought was specific to his family or culture. The details stay personal even when the audience gets much bigger.
That audience has also given Joe opportunities to bring people together in person. He explains how Chancla Academy Rockfest created space for local bands to play alongside established acts. He and Tab follow a shared love of heavy music into the practical work of organizing a festival, keeping an event accessible, and giving performers a stage they might otherwise struggle to reach.
At the time of the recording, Joe was preparing for another first: a longer stand-up show after an invitation from Our Lady of the Lake. Making a sketch for the internet had given him room to work on his own terms. A live audience would give him its answer immediately. Tab encourages him to keep developing the material and to learn from doing it. Joe had already found people who laughed at the stories he grew up with. Now he was getting ready to stand in the same room and tell them himself.
