Tab was eighteen when he styled his girlfriend Becky's hair for Halloween. He was helping her get ready for a night out, and discovering the work he would build his life around. Twenty-four years later, Becky sits in his chair again and hears how that night became part of his story.
It was Halloween in 2000. Becky Dominguez and a friend were dressing as goth kids, and Tab helped them get ready. Somewhere in the process, he discovered how much he enjoyed doing hair. What began with his girlfriend's Halloween costume became the beginning of a career.
Their history reaches from California to Austin, through music, friendships, and the versions of themselves they remember being. Becky talks about record-store days, waiting for concert tickets, meeting musicians, and keeping the photographs. Tab brings his own memories, including the small details that can send two old friends back into a story neither has quite forgotten.
Becky has a story about finding an unexpected love of her own. After resisting the suggestion that she try jiu-jitsu, she finally went to a class. She came home wanting to return. What followed took her from being one of very few women in the room to training regularly and competing. An invitation she had been reluctant to accept became something she chose to keep showing up for.
As they catch up, the Halloween story takes on another layer. Becky was there when Tab first felt drawn to the profession. Now she gets to see how much of his life grew from it, and hear how often her name has come up along the way.
In 2000, they were getting ready for a night out. In 2024, Tab finally finishes her hair again, with twenty-four years of a career between the two appointments.
